Psoriatric arthritis will often develop as a complication of psoriasis (psorisis), with something like one in three sufferers of psoriasis likely to be affected later in life by the psoriatric variety of arthritis. Strange as it may sound, these two conditions (psoriasis and arthritis) are related and one can lead to the other.
Psoriatic arthritis has the typical characteristics of joints swelling up, which is an inflammatory reaction called arthritis. The psoriasis component is a skin inflammation and this combined disease affects between one or two out of one hundred in the western population. Symptoms of psoriasis are red-ish and sometimes silvery or gray scale on the surface of patchy inflamed areas. This disorder will often affect fingers, toes, knees or elbows but also genital or anal areas. Psoriatic arthritus can also affect the joints in the low back, the sacroiliac joints, and the spine.
Psoriasis can commence at any age in life, but it often happens in the late teens. The further development where the arthritis component comes in will usually take longer. In a small percentage of cases, it is the arthiritis that comes before the psoriasis.
The asymmetric PA is the mildest form of the condition, it typically affects one side only, or in some cases both sides but with alternate joints. There may be swelling from inflammation in ligaments and tendons which may cause fingers and toes looking like mini-sausages. This particular form of the diseae is what is called dactylitis.
If the pain is located symmetrically in joints on both sides, the condition is called symmetric psoratic arthritis instead and it will usually affect a minimum of four joints on the two ides. There seem to be more female patients with symmetric psoratic arthritis which is typically also a more severe arthrities form than in other cases.
Spondylitis is a form which is strongly connected to spinal pain. It can also be the cause of a spinal inflammation, as well as in the sacroiliac joints or in the nect. Where the spine joins tendons and ligaments, there is also a slightly increased inflammation risk. Spondylitis is a progressive form of the disease and it will gradually become more painful and limiting.
Arthritis mutilans affects a small fraction of the psoriatic arthritis patients, it will over time lead to fingers and small bones permanently deforms if nothing is done.
Distal interphalangeal joint predominant psoriatric arthritis (or DIP) is an extremely unusual variety of arthritis and it particularly affect male patients. It will typically affect the small (the distal) joints in toes and fingers. Psoratic arthritis, psoriatic arthritus, psoriatric arthrisitis, psoratric arthrites symptoms.
Rheumatory arthritis (rheumotory arthrities) is a condition in where your own immune system starts to malfunction and attack the joints in your body. There are several different versions of the rhumatory arthiritis conditions, some affecting minor joints, and others affecting major joints but as the rheumotoid arthritus progresses, it will likely affect and destroy both minor and major joints unless treated with blocking medicines such as the rumatory TNF blockers.
